Description

Michael Powers

powers700x380

An adventure photographer, writer, filmmaker and wilderness guide, widely published and recognized internationally for his conception and successful execution of many cause-related expeditions and media projects. Michael studied photography, art and journalism in California before launching his media career in 1968. He has traveled to many remote and wild regions of the world and wrote numerous magazine articles for major U.S. and European outdoor, travel and photography publications, including Outside and National Geographic. His photography has been featured on the covers of adventure travel catalogs, in exhibitions and on dozens of magazine articles and book covers.

In 2005 Michael Powers co-founded OCEAN STUDIO, an alliance of adventure photographers, writers and filmmakers, working together to nurture a deeper understanding and empathy for the natural world. A recent Ocean Studio project was the publication of the large format photography book and companion film for television, WILD IN SPIRIT, featuring pinnacle images and commentary from OS eco-expeditions around the world.

In 2005 he collaborated with fellow Ocean Studio filmmaker Mark Fraser to create the award-winning film THE GOOD FIGHT (Telluride Mountainfilm '06), about the saving of the Grand Canyon from damming by eco-legend Martin Litton.

Powers is a Commander in the Tsunami Rangers, an "extreme condition" sea kayaking team featured on the National Geographic Explorer TV series (Wave Warriors, 1992), ESPN's Expedition Earth (circumnavigating Easter Island by kayak) and MTV Sports (kayak surfing in California). With fellow Ranger Eric Soares, Michael co-authored and was the principal photographer for the book EXTREME SEA KAYAKING, published by McGraw-Hill.
